CELEBRATING NATURE’S BOUNTY ON TU B’SHEVAT

Tu B’Shevat is a Jewish holiday known as New Year for the Trees. It is the 15th day of the Jewish month of Shevat, and this year it begins the evening of Friday, February 10 and ends the evening of February 11.

Tu B’Shevat marks a new year for calculating the age each tree for purposes of tithing and marks the beginning of spring in Israel. Tu B’Shevat is one of four new years described in the Mishnah and is a time to celebrate the natural world and its bounty. Gratitude is given for the fruits of the earth and all that grows.

One of the most common practices in observing Tu B’Shevat is to eat from the Seven Species (shivat haminim) described in the Torah as being abundant in the land of Israel. The shivat haminim include: wheat, barley, grapes (vines), figs, pomegranates, olives and dates.

Trees are a symbol of our investment in the future. Because they take so long to grow, planting them is an investment in our children. Trees provide shade and food. They purify the water and the air and provide homes for a variety of life. Honoring trees reminds us of the investments of our ancestors and our obligations to our children.

Abundance and the Tu B’Shavat table

A bounty of fruits and vegetables grace the traditional Tu B’Shevat table. Some partake in a Tu B’Shevat seder meal, an affair complete with food blessings and prayers. Some take their celebration outside for a picnic among the trees. Still others make a wonderful meal that features the bounty of the earth. In Israel, people are encouraged to plant trees, giving back to the earth, in a manner similar to Arbor Day in the United States.

There are many ways to celebrate Tu B’Shevat. The earth overflows with wonderful bounty, and some of the best is available at Livonia Glatt Market.
