WHY IS PASSOVER EXPENSIVE?
Any observant Jew can tell you, it’s not always easy, and it’s certainly not cheap. Kosher food costs more. Although the diet is simple, it can get costly. But why do prices skyrocket during Passover for what is possibly the world’s first trendy diet? Is this a supply and demand thing?
SO, WHY IS PASSOVER SO EXPENSIVE?
The main driver of high costs is due to the religious rules and regulations of Passover. For Passover, a mashgiach, or kashrut supervisor, must be present through every step of the way to “guard” the food and ensure that everything is done in accordance with long-standing rules. The full-time food supervision extends beyond ensuring that Matzah doesn’t rise – it guarantees that the spices, oils, and even ketchup are made within kosher guidelines. Passover or not, Jewish law always states that kosher meat must be soaked in water for half an hour, salted, and then thoroughly washed three times. Just to be super safe, companies have to thoroughly clean all non-kosher-for-Passover production equipment to make sure there’s no cross-contamination. As a result, production becomes expensive. By the time the food hits the shelves the kosher for Passover ketchup is more expensive than the year-round kosher ketchup.
